JCI Zugbuana Launches Bags for Hope Project for Students of Okoy Elementary School

On May 23, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, JCI Zugbuana, in partnership with JCI Manila, brought hope, inspiration, and opportunity to the students of Okoy Elementary School through the Bags for Hope project.

Led by Project Chairman Director M. Therese Dianne Espina, the initiative sought to empower underprivileged students in remote and underserved communities by providing them with backpacks filled with essential school and art supplies. More than simply distributing educational materials, Bags for Hope aimed to encourage young learners to pursue their dreams and continue their education with confidence.

The project was made possible through the generous support of WINPH, PMFTC People and Culture, VIEW (Visayas Inclusive and Empowered Women), and PMFTC Visayas, whose contributions helped ensure that the students received the tools they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

As students gathered for the event, volunteers from JCI Zugbuana and JCI Manila welcomed them with enthusiasm and encouragement. Each child received a backpack containing school supplies carefully selected to support their educational journey. For many of the students, these simple yet meaningful items represented more than just supplies—they symbolized opportunity, support, and the belief that their futures matter.

Beyond the distribution of school materials, the project featured a heartfelt program designed to inspire self-reflection and goal setting among the students. One of the most memorable activities invited the children to write down what they wanted to become in the future or leave a message for their future selves. The exercise encouraged them to dream boldly and imagine the possibilities that lay ahead.

As colorful sheets of paper filled with aspirations and heartfelt messages began to take shape, the room came alive with hope. Some students envisioned themselves as teachers, nurses, engineers, and police officers, while others shared simple but powerful wishes for a better future for themselves and their families. Their words served as a reminder that every child carries within them unlimited potential when given the proper support and opportunities.

The Bags for Hope project reflects the shared commitment of JCI Zugbuana and JCI Manila to investing in the next generation. While backpacks and school supplies may seem like modest gifts, they can make a meaningful difference in the lives of students who face barriers to education. More importantly, the project reinforced a message that every child deserves to dream, learn, and succeed regardless of circumstance.

Through initiatives such as Bags for Hope, JCI continues to create positive change by empowering communities and developing opportunities for young people to reach their fullest potential. By combining practical support with inspiration and encouragement, the project demonstrated that hope is not simply given—it is nurtured, one student at a time.

As the event concluded, the smiles on the faces of the students and the dreams they shared stood as powerful reminders of why community service matters. The backpacks they carried home contained more than school supplies; they carried renewed confidence, inspiration, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow.
