In the heart of JCI Manila, where ideas collide and ideals are forged, a quiet pitch once stood at the edge of attention. Not loud. Not flashy. Just a deep-seated belief that something needed to be done. That pitch was called SafeMILE Kids, and from the moment it was voted in as a BJC project, it carried the weight of a mission—not just for the youth it aimed to serve, but for the team that brought it to life.
At the core of this project were three men, each carrying more than a title. They carried a responsibility—to their community, their teammates, and themselves.
Atty. Janzen Bernardo was the anchor. As Finance Head, he ensured every cent was accountable, every paper trail clear. As Legal Counsel, he safeguarded the project’s credibility, drafting and reviewing agreements with precision. But his role went deeper. It was Janzen’s idea that birthed SafeMILE Kids. And when the BJC class was asked to choose a project to champion, the majority raised their hands for his vision. With that came a quiet contract with himself: This will not fail.
Jacy Ramirez, Co-Chair, became the voice behind the scenes—the communicator, connector, and calm in the storm. It was Jacy who reached out to guest speakers, who crafted letters, confirmed logistics, and kept the fire burning when timelines tightened. From securing Binibining Pilipinas 2024 candidate Kim Valasco and La Salle’s social media personality Iya Vosotros, to maintaining communication with school partners, Jacy ensured the project didn’t just move—it flowed.
At the helm stood Chairman JC Regino—the storyteller, strategist, and silent workhorse. He wasn’t just managing timelines; he was carrying purpose. Whenever someone had to step back, JC stepped forward. Whenever something felt like it might fall through, he caught it. But the story of his leadership didn’t start with SafeMILE Kids.
It began years ago, in the hallways of San Beda University, where JC first met Past Director Calvin Grageda. Their friendship would plant a seed, one that would only take root after life’s many milestones. In 2023, Calvin invited JC to join JCI Manila. At the time, JC was in the middle of work, wedding plans, and an all-too-familiar chaos of adulting. He respectfully declined.
But life, as always, had its timing.
After tying the knot and clearing the fog of personal busyness, the invitation returned—and this time, JC said yes. That “yes” led him to the Baby Jaycee Project, where he began his journey like many others: learning, listening, finding his place. But for JC, Baby Jaycee wasn’t just an orientation—it was a passageway. A gentle but firm nudge toward something greater. It wasn’t about learning how to volunteer. It was about discovering the why behind service.
And from that passageway came SafeMILE Kids.
Fundraising always begins with grand ideas—and this team had plenty. From event nights to brand collaborations, they wanted to do it all. But the clock ticked fast. Reality whispered something the dreamers didn’t want to hear: Strip it down. Keep it simple. Lead with truth.
So they did.
Instead of asking for money, they shared the heart behind the mission. They knocked on doors—not as salesmen, but as advocates. And the response was overwhelming.
From AXA Philippines, Naturearth, and Banh Mi Kitchen, to Escarda’s Trading, Siesta Horchata Cafe, and PALDO, the community leaned in. Cash, goods, partnerships—they all came. So did family. Directors. Friends. Silent donors. Sponsors. Together, they raised ₱623,850.00, proof that sincerity still moves mountains.
SafeMILE Kids wasn’t built alone. It was executed under the Special Projects Directorate—a powerhouse within JCI Manila that champions ideas with bold impact and rapid deployment. Director Joshua Rueben Aragon, who led the Special Projects team, provided the structure, trust, and support needed to transform SafeMILE Kids from an idea into an action-driven initiative. His guidance helped align the project with JCI Manila’s broader mission while ensuring the team had the freedom to innovate and execute.
Under Dir. Joshua’s leadership, SafeMILE Kids wasn’t just supported—it was empowered.
More than a project, SafeMILE Kids is a direct answer to an indirect threat: the invisible dangers of the digital world. The vision became a living, breathing movement on May 5, 2025. That date marked more than just an event—it was the culmination of late nights, endless emails, hard-won partnerships, and the quiet persistence of a team that simply refused to let go of its “why.”
Media and Information Literacy Education (MILE) became the foundation. Through its partnership with the National Council for Children’s Television (NCCT), JCI Manila launched a program designed to build digital resilience, cyber safety, and critical awareness for children and their parents.
The goal: empower over 500 students, parents, and educators with tools to stay safe, think smart, and thrive in today’s online landscape.
From cyberbullying awareness to educational materials, from responsible screen time to emotional intelligence, the program wasn’t just a workshop—it was a shield.
Originally, SafeMILE Kids was set for Batasan Hills National High School. But despite interest, the needed approvals never came. The team pivoted, eyes set on a private school with a mission that matched theirs. Enter Immaculada Conception College in Caloocan. Through the support of School President Sir Marco Agana, a JCI Manila ally, and the warm welcome of Principal Gema, ICC became not just a venue—but a home.
It was the perfect setting for something unforgettable.
There are speeches that fill time—and then there are words that fill hearts.
DepEd Assistant Secretary Cilette Liboro Co, speaking on behalf of Education Secretary Sonny Angara, moved the room with this:
“There is no deeper desire than to keep our children safe. Not just in our homes nor schools but especially in the digital world that we cannot always predict.”
And when JCI Manila President Jan Adrian Padiernos declared,
“SafeMILE Kids is more than a program. Panawagan ito,”
Everyone knew: this wasn’t just about fulfilling a BJC requirement This was about answering a call.
The Afterglow and the Road Ahead
For Chairman JC Regino, SafeMILE Kids was more than just a passion project. It was a culmination of timing, mentorship, and personal conviction.
From meeting Calvin in college… to Baby Jaycee… to leading a movement that will ripple far beyond its first venue—his journey is proof that when the right people are called at the right time, extraordinary things happen.
And SafeMILE Kids?
It’s no longer just a project.
It’s a panawagan.
A call to protect, to educate, to rise above the digital noise—and to choose empathy over indifference.
Because in a world full of noise, sometimes all it takes is one clear voice to say:
“We choose to protect our children—online, offline, always.”
